F5 · Virgin birth and incarnation

Conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary.

Tier: First-order (scoring weight 3). How the tiers were set: theological triage. Method: conventions. Traditions’ sources: confessional sources.

In short

Matthew and Luke both say Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit without a human father and born of the virgin Mary. The earliest fathers confess this, and all nine traditions hold it.

Plan

Questions

  • F05.1 Conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary
  • F05.2 Did Christ take his flesh from Mary’s own substance?

Overall verdict

All nine confess the virginal conception, as do Scripture and the fathers from Era I. (Mary’s perpetual virginity is a separate, second-order question under S18.) On F05.2 the Mennonite celestial flesh departs from Scripture and Irenaeus.
