T2 reasoning: Timing of end-times events
Reasoning steps: Timing of end-times events
Verdicts: T2 · Timing of end-times events. Method: conventions, scoring and proximity eras. Scripture is the primary measure; fathers are weighed by era (Era I to c. 150 = 1.0, II = 0.8, III = 0.6, IV = 0.4).
T02.1: Does the church pass through the final tribulation?
Step T02.1.1: Scripture
Matt 24:29–31: the elect are gathered ‘after the tribulation of those days’. 2 Thess 2:1–3: ‘our being gathered together to him’ will not come ‘unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed’. 1 Thess 4:17 describes the meeting at the Lord’s coming, not a separate earlier event.
Step T02.1.2: Patristic evidence
Didache (Era I): ’then shall appear the world-deceiver as the Son of God’, and then ’the world shall see the Lord coming upon the clouds’; believers must endure. Sources: didache-t02-s1 · didache-t02-s2.
Step T02.1.3: Weighing decision
Unanimous: the church faces the deceiver, then the single return. A secret pre-tribulation rapture is unknown before the 19th century. Verdict: consensus.
- Confidence: High.
Step T02.1.4: Source-proximity weighing
- Scripture (benchmark): The gathering comes ‘after the tribulation’ (Matt 24:29–31) and after the man of lawlessness (2 Thess 2:3). (Scripture confidence: medium-high)
- Assessment: Scripture and Era I agree; none of the nine classic traditions teaches a pre-tribulation rapture.
T02.2: Is the ‘man of lawlessness’ a future individual, or the papacy?
Step T02.2.1: Scripture
2 Thess 2:3–8: ’the man of lawlessness … who opposes and exalts himself … takes his seat in the temple of God’, whom ’the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth’; 1 John 2:18 (‘many antichrists’).
Step T02.2.2: Patristic evidence
Irenaeus (Era II, V.25) expects a single Antichrist, ‘an apostate and a robber, … anxious to be adored as God’, at the end. No father before 750 identifies him with a church office. Sources: irenaeus-t02-s1.
Step T02.2.3: Weighing decision
Era II reads a single eschatological person, destroyed at Christ’s coming. The Reformation identification of the papacy has no early support and strains ‘kill … by the appearance of his coming’. Verdict: a future individual; the papal identification is a post-750 polemical reading.
- Confidence: Medium-high.
Step T02.2.4: Source-proximity weighing
- Scripture (benchmark): He is destroyed at Christ’s coming (2 Thess 2:8): an end-time figure. (Scripture confidence: medium)
- Assessment: Scripture and Era II agree on a future figure; traditions that confess the pope as Antichrist score 2.
