T10 reasoning: Final punishment

Reasoning steps: Final punishment

Verdicts: T10 · Final punishment. Shared notes and post-750 development: afterlife.

T10.1 (was afterlife/L5): Eternal torment vs. annihilation vs. restoration

Step T10.1.1: Scripture

Matt 25:41, 46 (κόλασιν αἰώνιον / ζωὴν αἰώνιον, in parallel); Mark 9:48; Rev 14:11; 20:10. Annihilation texts: Matt 10:28 (ἀπολέσαι); 2 Thess 1:9 (ὄλεθρον αἰώνιον); Rom 6:23. Restoration texts: 1 Cor 15:28; Col 1:20; Acts 3:21 (ἀποκαταστάσεως πάντων). αἰώνιος means ‘of the age’; its parallel use in Matt 25:46 favours equal duration (lexical debate to verify).

Step T10.1.2: Patristic evidence

Torment: ignatius-aft-s1, irenaeus-aft-s1, augustine-aft-s3. Restoration: origen-aft-s1, origen-aft-s2, gregory-of-nyssa-aft-s1. Annihilation: arnobius-aft-s1. Condemnation: constantinople-553-aft-s1.

Step T10.1.3: Weighing decision

Reading A: eternal conscious punishment is the majority patristic view. Reading B: restoration was an accepted minority view, held by Gregory of Nyssa, who was never condemned. Reading C: annihilation, a rare view (Arnobius). A is the consensus, and B a significant minority. Augustine himself testifies that “very many” held merciful views (XXI.17, wording to verify). The anathemas of 553 condemn the Origenist system (pre-existence plus restoration), and Gregory of Nyssa was not named. C has negligible support. On Scripture, the parallel in Matt 25:46 weighs heavily for A.

  • Confidence: High (A is the majority); medium on the scope of the 553 condemnation

Step T10.1.4: Source-proximity weighing

See the proximity tiers.

  • Scripture (benchmark): Matt 25:46 (the parallel αἰώνιος); Mark 9:48; Rev 14:11; 20:10 weigh against restoration and annihilation; Matt 10:28 and 2 Thess 1:9 are read within that. (Scripture confidence: medium-high)
  • Key sources by tier: Ignatius (T1, w 1.0); Gregory of Nyssa (T3, w 0.6); Arnobius (T3, w 0.6); Constantinople II (T4, w 0.4). Proximity factor: 0.65 (mean tier weight of 4 key source(s)).
  • Assessment: Ignatius (T1) and Justin (T2) teach eternal punishment, and Scripture (Matt 25:46) agrees. Restoration enters with Origen and Nyssa (T2/T3). The proximity principle strengthens the majority verdict. Verdict unchanged.

T10.2: Are there degrees of punishment?

Step T10.2.1: Scripture

Luke 12:47–48 (‘a severe beating … a light beating’); Matt 11:22–24 (‘more bearable’); Rev 20:12–13.

Step T10.2.2: Patristic evidence

Augustine (Era III, Enchiridion 93): ’the punishment of each will be the more tolerable in the next world, according as his iniquity has been less in this world’. Sources: augustine-t10x-s1.

Step T10.2.3: Weighing decision

Consensus. Verdict: degrees of punishment.

  • Confidence: High.

Step T10.2.4: Source-proximity weighing

  • Scripture (benchmark): ‘More bearable’ (Matt 11:22). (Scripture confidence: high)
  • Assessment: Consensus.
