T12 reasoning: Spiritual gifts

Reasoning steps: Spiritual gifts

Verdicts: T12 · Spiritual gifts. Method: conventions, scoring and proximity eras. Scripture is the primary measure; fathers are weighed by era (Era I to c. 150 = 1.0, II = 0.8, III = 0.6, IV = 0.4).

T12.1: Spiritual gifts: cessation or continuation

Step T12.1.1: Scripture

1 Cor 13:8–10: prophecy and tongues cease ‘when the perfect comes’. Eph 2:20: the church built on apostles and prophets as foundation. Heb 2:3–4: signs attested the apostolic message. Acts 2:17–18: the last-days outpouring. None says the gifts end with the apostles.

Step T12.1.2: Patristic evidence

Irenaeus (Era II): some ‘have foreknowledge of things to come’, others ‘speak all kinds of languages’, and ’the dead even have been raised up’. Chrysostom (Era III): the gifts were ‘such as then used to occur but now no longer take place’. Sources: irenaeus-t12-s1 · irenaeus-t12-s2 · irenaeus-t12-s3 · chrysostom-t12-s1.

Step T12.1.3: Weighing decision

Era II reports continuing gifts; by Era III leading fathers say they have ceased. Verdict: split by era.

  • Confidence: Medium.

Step T12.1.4: Source-proximity weighing

  • Scripture (benchmark): Scripture does not state when the gifts cease (1 Cor 13:10 is disputed). (Scripture confidence: low)
  • Assessment: Era II favours continuation, Era III cessation; Scripture is not decisive.
