T22 reasoning: Israel and the Church

Reasoning steps: Israel and the Church

Verdicts: T22 · Israel and the Church. Method: conventions, scoring and proximity eras. Scripture is the primary measure; fathers are weighed by era (Era I to c. 150 = 1.0, II = 0.8, III = 0.6, IV = 0.4).

T22.1: A future turning of Israel to Christ

Step T22.1.1: Scripture

‘A partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And in this way all Israel will be saved’ (Rom 11:25–26); ’the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable’ (11:29). Whether ‘all Israel’ means the Jewish people at the end or the elect of Israel through history is disputed; the context (11:11–24) favours a future turning of the Jewish people, but not certainly.

Step T22.1.2: Patristic evidence

Augustine (Era III): ‘It is a familiar theme in the conversation and heart of the faithful, that in the last days before the judgment the Jews shall believe in the true Christ … by means of this great and admirable prophet Elias’. Sources: augustine-t22-s1.

Step T22.1.3: Weighing decision

Era III reports a common expectation of a future conversion of the Jews; Era I–II evidence was not found in the texts checked. Verdict: a future conversion of Israel was a common Era III expectation; Scripture supports it on the most natural reading of Rom 11, with low certainty.

  • Confidence: Medium–low.

Step T22.1.4: Source-proximity weighing

  • Scripture (benchmark): Rom 11:25–29 most naturally points to a future turning of the Jewish people, but the meaning of ‘all Israel’ is disputed. (Scripture confidence: low)
  • Assessment: Only one Era III witness was checked; traditions that expect a future conversion match it.

T22.2: The ceremonial law fulfilled; the Church as Israel

Step T22.2.1: Scripture

Food laws and festivals are ‘a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ’ (Col 2:16–17); the first covenant is ‘becoming obsolete’ (Heb 8:13); Gentiles are not required to be circumcised (Acts 15); ’not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel’ (Rom 9:6); ’the Israel of God’ (Gal 6:16).

Step T22.2.2: Patristic evidence

Ignatius (Era I): ‘It is absurd to profess Christ Jesus, and to Judaize’. Justin (Era II): ’the true spiritual Israel … are we who have been led to God through this crucified Christ’. Sources: ignatius-t22-s1 · justin-martyr-t22-s1.

Step T22.2.3: Weighing decision

Era I–II agree that the ceremonial law has ended and that believers in Christ are the true Israel; Scripture says the same about the law, while Rom 11 keeps a place for ethnic Israel. Verdict: consensus from Era I that the ceremonial law ended in Christ; the Church as ’true Israel’ is Era II language with a basis in Gal 6:16 and Rom 9:6.

  • Confidence: High.

Step T22.2.4: Source-proximity weighing

  • Scripture (benchmark): Col 2:16–17, Heb 8:13 and Acts 15 end the ceremonial law for believers. (Scripture confidence: high)
  • Assessment: All traditions scored agree; they differ only on emphasis.
