T2 · Timing of end-times events

Tribulation and rapture questions, preterism.

Tier: Third-order (scoring weight 1). How the tiers were set: theological triage. Method: conventions. Traditions’ sources: confessional sources.

In short

Scripture and the earliest Christian writings expect believers to live through the final troubles and the rise of a great deceiver before Christ’s one, visible return. A secret rapture before the tribulation was unknown until the 1800s, and none of these nine traditions teaches it in its classic confessions.

Plan

Question: T02.1: will the church pass through the final tribulation and Antichrist before Christ’s single visible return (no separate pre-tribulation rapture)? Scripture: Matt 24:21–31; 2 Thess 2:1–12; 1 Thess 4:16–17. Fathers: Didache 16. Question: T02.2: Is the ‘man of lawlessness’ a future individual, or the papacy?

Overall verdict

All nine classic traditions expect one visible return after the final tribulation, matching Scripture and the Didache. (Dispensational pre-tribulationism is 19th-century and outside these classic formulations.) On T02.2 Catholic and Orthodox fit Era II best; Lutheran, Presbyterian and Reformed Baptist confess the papal reading.
